PORR has been awarded the design and build contract of the S19 expressway, along with a section of the DK19 national road, by Poland’s General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

The gross value of the contract is estimated at over $138m (about PLN526m).

The contract also includes the building of two road interchanges, Kuźnica and Sokółka Północ, along with the construction of 12 engineering structures, among which are a bridge and a railway viaduct.

The S19 expressway runs from Kuźnica on the Polish-Belarus border, going through the Podlaskie Voivodeship to Sokółka, in Poland. PORR will be in charge of constructing 10.55 km of the northernmost section of the S19 expressway.

The new route has been planned in such a way as to bypass the centre of Kuźnica in the north, providing sustainable relief to the city from transit vehicles.

PORR will be constructing a total of 15 new km of roadway by 2024.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “As part of the Via Carpathia, the S19 is an important component of the trans-European transport network. Having been awarded the contract for the construction of the section between Kuźnica and Sokółka, we are making a significant contribution to a better north-south connection between Belarus and Slovakia and once again proving our expertise in infrastructure development.”

Construction works are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2022, following the procurement of the required permission to execute a road project (ZRID).

With a total length of 570km, the S19 expressway will go through the cities of Hrodna, Białystok, Lublin, Rzeszów and Košice.

It will not only be an important north-south link between Belarus and Slovakia but also an important section of Via Carpathia, the international motorway network.

Commissioning of the S19’s nearly 175 km-long Podlachian section has been planned for 2025.
