Popular is set to commence construction of two office buildings in Hato Rey, San Juan, of Puerto Rico with the target of making a corporate campus to centralise its operations.

The company will invest over $300m in the project.

The construction is expected to continue until 2026.

Popular president and CEO Ignacio Alvarez said: “Our Hato Rey corporate campus will allow a greater number of Popular employees to work from our new facilities, offering an environment that fosters their well-being, and where learning, collaboration and innovation are continuously encouraged.

“We are committed to Puerto Rico and its potential, and we understand that an important part of the economic recovery comes from bold projects such as this one. We expect our campus to further transform Hato Rey into a center of urban movement, offering a wide variety of amenities to our employees, customers and visitors.”

Popular stated that during the construction phase, this project is anticipated to create nearly 1,700 jobs directly and indirectly.

The project will include two buildings, with one building beside Popular Center and movie theaters, where at present the Fine Arts parking lot is situated.

This first building will have 10 floors of new office space, a new training and development centre for employees, a food court, gardens, and parking for 500 cars, among other offerings.

A 126-room hotel will also be included in the building’s higher level.

A wellness centre and a gym for employees, a supermarket, food outlets, and nearly 800 parking spaces will feature in the second building.

To obtain LEED certifications from the US Green Building Council, the new buildings have been designed with consideration towards the environment.
