Gateshead Council in the UK has given planning approval for the £260m conference and events destination in Gateshead.

In November last year, the council along with its development partner Ask:Patrizia has appointed Sir Robert McAlpine, a construction company, to deliver the regeneration scheme.

The planning application of the 54,500m2 scheme, which is to be built on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside, was submitted by Ask:PATRIZIA.

The project will include the construction of an arena, exhibition and conference centre, two hotels, bars, restaurants, car parking and extensive areas of the public realm.

ASM Global, a venue and event management firm, has been appointed to operate the campus that will include a 12,500-seater, 29,000m2 arena along with more than 7,000m2 of flexible event space.

Gateshead Council said that the arena will host first-class entertainment and sports along with international conferences, meetings and exhibitions, festivals and cultural events.

The hotel operator is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Sir Robert McAlpine will commence the site enabling work before the end of the year with construction expected to begin in March next year. The new complex scheduled to be opened in late 2023.

Gateshead Council leader Martin Gannon said: “Our long-term aspiration has always been to bring internationally recognisable facilities of this scale to not just Gateshead but the entire region.

“This project is transformational, and today’s decision signals confidence in the North East. Newcastle Gateshead Quays will be a global leader in entertainment, leisure, and hospitality but most importantly it is about creating new employment and training opportunities for thousands at a time when they are badly needed.

“Despite the current challenges, we need to remember the worth of the events industry. We look forward to opening the venue late 2023.”
