The US Department of the Interior (DOI) has approved the plan for the construction of $1bn integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage facility on federal lands near Las Vegas, Nevada.

Being developed by Solar Partners XI, the Gemini solar project will comprise 690MW of solar PV installations as well as a 380MW battery energy storage facility. The project is expected to become the biggest of its kind in the US upon completion.

Planned to be completed in phases, the Gemini solar project will have the capacity to generate electricity enough to power 260,000 homes in the Las Vegas area and potential energy markets in Southern California.

Solar Energy Industries Association president and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper said: “Despite the challenges of the coronavirus, we’re pleased to see that Nevada will soon be home to one of the biggest solar projects in the world.

The solar facility will feature multiple solar array blocks comprising PV modules mounted on horizontal, single-axis trackers.

The integrated battery energy storage system will feature approximately 425 units of 5MWh, four-hour battery storage systems designed to store excess electricity generation from the PV panels.
