Peab has been secured a contract to rebuild E22 between Lösen and Jämjö outside of Karlskrona in Sweden.

It has secured the contract from Swedish Transport Administration.

The contract is valued at SEK745m.

Peab will be responsible for rebuilding a 15km stretch of the road between Lösen and Jämjö into a freeway to improve traffic safety and passability.

Currently, the standard of the road is considered to be low for the amount of traffic on it.

The project will also improve the residential environment in Jämjö since traffic will be transferred to outside the city while more noise barriers will be installed along this stretch of road.

Many new interchanges are planned to boost the safety and passability of pedestrians, bicyclists and mass transit.

Peab region manager Göran Wiking said: “It feels very important to contribute to improving traffic safety and passability on this stretch of E22 for all kinds of traffic. We’re building for the future and everyday life where it’s lived, which is what we as the Nordic Community Builder do.”

The project includes 23 bridges, of which many will feature fauna passages to boost passability for animals.

Some of the bridges are expected to promote leisure activities in the area and the complete stretch will be lined with game fence to cut down the risk of accidents with wild animals.

Swedish Transport Administration project manager Johan Wolgast said: “We bring Sweden closer together by shortening the distance between people and business. At the same time we create the right conditions for all transportation and travel to take place in the best and safest way, wherever you live, and with consideration to the environment and health.”

Construction of the project will commence in the spring 2022 and is expected to be completed in winter 2024.

The project is a turnkey contract, which will be registered by the firm in Q1 2022.
