Swedish construction and civil engineering firm Peab has secured a $41.7m (SEK365m) contract from Swedish Transport Administration to renovate Tingstad Tunnel in Gothenburg.

Tingstad Tunnel is said to be one of the important routes in the region that connects Hisingen and Gothenburg mainland area.

Built in 1968, the tunnel is used by nearly 125,000 motorists every day.

Peab region manager Berth Larsson said: “Peab has long and broad expertise in building and renovating heavily trafficked environments such as in the recently completed project of lowering E45 and building the new Gullberg Tunnel in central Gothenburg.

“Naturally we’ll bring all that experience into play when we renovate Tingstad Tunnel. We look forward to continuing our good working relationship with the Swedish Transport Administration and our other partners.”

Under this contract, Peab will be renovating the entire stretch of the 455m tunnel by replacing its wall and roof. It will also repave the entire road.

Additionally, it will replace the lights, fans within the tunnel and install a new fire alarm system as well as a new system to handle the rainwater that accumulates in the tunnel.

Construction works are expected to begin in spring next year and to be completed by the end of 2023/2024.

During the tunnel renovation works, Peab will close one tunnel section at a time.

Upon completion, the project is expected to increase Tingstad Tunnel life span by 30-50 years.

In March this year, Peab secured a contract worth $14.3m (SEK122m) from Swedish Transport Administration to reconstruct a section of road between Sandtorpet and Björkåkla on Highway 35.
