Construction projects worth more than $5bn have been reportedly stalled in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan due to economic turmoil and uncertainty.
The country’s union of private construction companies has called on the new government to appoint a minister for urban development and housing in order to tackle the uncertainty of these projects, reported TOLOnews.

Following the takeover of the Taliban, the country has been experiencing economic volatility and deterioration, leading to the halt of several construction projects.
Members of the union allege that the construction companies have not been paid for their investments on these projects.
The union’s head Farid Tatar said: “Projects that are worth approximately five billion dollars remain unfished. Every day we appeal to the prime minister and deputy ministers. Despite making pledges, they have not found a solution for our problems.”
The country has close to 2,500 construction companies. With the stalling of the projects, thousands of workers in the sector have been left unemployed.

The Islamic Emirate has, however, reiterated its commitment to soon appoint a minister for urban development and housing.
TOLOnews quoted Bilal Karimi deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate as saying: “The selection of the cabinet is still on track. The authorities are attempting to select professional figures who have the capacity and good quality. We expect the appointment of the (minister) soon.”
