A consortium of Orascom Construction and Mitsubishi has secured an $800m contract to deliver a work package for Cairo Metro Line 4 Phase 1.

The contract, awarded by government agency the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), involves the Railway Systems, Track and Depot Works Package (CP411) for the metro section.

The scope of works includes the delivery of signalling works, power supply, telecommunication, platform screen door, automatic fare collection systems, track work and building depot/workshop.

As agreed, Mitsubishi will be responsible for supplying equipment that will be used to build the railway systems as well as associated administrative work.

Orascom will carry out the civil engineering work and build the train operation control centre and other facilities.

Orascom Construction CEO Osama Bishai said: “This contract is testament to our strength in the transportation sector and builds on our longstanding involvement in the development of Cairo Metro.

“We are pleased to partner with Mitsubishi Corporation on this new line which will be receiving funding from the Japanese International Corporation Agency and to collaborate once again with our repeat client, the National Authority for Tunnels.

“This project also positions us for future work in this sector, ranging from new phases of Cairo Metro to new railway projects.”

The first phase of the underground Cairo Metro Line 4 will stretch 19km and will include 16 stations.

It will run from central Cairo to the Giza Pyramid Complex in the south-western part of Greater Cairo and is expected to help in reducing traffic congestion in the region.

Recently, Orascom Construction delivered Cairo Metro Line 3 Phase 4B which extended the network by 8km and included five elevated stations and a depot.
