Oak View Group (OVG), a development and investment company, has secured approval from Manchester City Council to develop a new £350m arena, named Co-op Live, in East Manchester, UK.

OVG is developing the project in collaboration with the Co-op, a British consumer co-operative.

Designed by architect Populous, the arena will have a maximum seat capacity of 23,500.

The facility, to be located on the Etihad campus, is expected to be the largest in the UK, said Populous.

Upon receipt of final confirmation from national planning authorities, OVG has planned to commence work on the venue as early as November with events expected to begin in 2023.

The project is estimated to create 3,350 jobs during the three-year construction phase and further 1,000 jobs once the arena is operational.

The new venue will be powered using renewable energy and will have energy efficiency and low carbon technologies.

Proposals for the new arena were submitted in March following an in-depth consultation with the local community.

Populous said that the arena will benefit from the existing transport connections to the Etihad Campus.

Additionally, OVG has pledged to invest in upgrading walking and cycling routes, along with backing an expanded controlled parking zone to reduce disruption for local residents.

Populous senior principal and project architect Declan Sharkey said: “In line with Oak View Group’s vision, the new arena in Eastlands, Manchester has been designed to attract even more global headline events and acts to Manchester and become a catalyst for further economic and cultural investment for the city.

“Our team has worked intensively across all elements of the building’s ambitious design to ensure the arena succeeds in drawing visitors from far and wide and each one has an unforgettable, world-class entertainment experience.”
