France-based architect Vincent Callebaut has developed a master plan for the new Città della Scienza that would transform Rome’s military district into a self-sufficient urban ecosystem.
The plan’s large public spaces and emphasis on urban connectivity are intended to promote social mixing of the different identities and cultural spots in the district.
According to Callebaut, Città della Scienza aims to bring functionality and visual appeal to the area, as well as encourage sustainable design, low carbon transportation, renewable energies, automation technologies and the use of green building materials.
Inspired by land art, the eco-district will feature building facades covered by edible plants, with roofs and balconies offering extra ground space for the green city.
As part of Callebaut’s design, a grid of public spaces will connect all of the pathways from piazza Melozzo da Forlì to piazza Mancini, through Via Flaminia and the MAXXI square.
The landscaped architecture also aims to meet rainwater recovery rates for irrigating public and private green areas, photovoltaic electricity production and domestic hot water production by solar tubes.
