UK based multi-disciplinary management and engineering firm Mott MacDonald will design a flood protection scheme in Stonehaven, UK.

The concrete developments to be established under the £15m project are planned to guard the town’s residents from River Carron flooding.

Located within the Scottish Aberdeenshire Council region, the town has experienced multiple floods with the most recent being in December 2012.

Flood risks for Stonehaven are expected to increase due to the changing climate, weather patterns and an anticipated increase in rainfall.

"We are aiming to minimise the impact on the watercourse during construction by maintaining part of the existing river channel where possible."

Mott MacDonald aims to complete the scheme in 2018.

The firm will be responsible for designing flood walls and embankments along the river. It will use 2D hydraulic modelling in order to have a virtual representation of the flood levels for verification before it initiates construction.

Mott MacDonald is presently carrying out ground investigations and environmental surveys for the development.

Implementation of building information modelling is enabling the designer to integrate approaches of all the involved parties for the project.

Mott MacDonald project director Stephen Knight said: "We have been improving the efficiency of the initial concept design by reducing piling requirements, overall material volumes and simplifying construction requirements.

"Working with statutory bodies, we are aiming to minimise the impact on the watercourse during construction by maintaining part of the existing river channel where possible."
