Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has developed the preliminary design concepts for its world-class athletic performance research centre.

The research centre has been planned under a strategic partnership with the basketball team, Milwaukee Bucks.

Initially announced in January this year, the centre is intended to promote elite-level intercollegiate and professional athletics, academic research and campus health and wellness initiatives.

With regards to scale, appearance and function, preliminary design concepts are expected to change in the future as modifications are permitted in the scope of the project.

Marquette University aims to develop refined design concepts for the centre to augment the character of the existing campus and respect its urban context.

Budget, scope and project timeline will be defined in the coming months.

"Marquette University aims to develop refined design concepts for the centre to augment the character of the existing campus and respect its urban context."

The facility will be constructed at 800 block of West Michigan Street, a property which has recently been acquired by the university.

The acquisition has been financed through philanthropic gifts, corporate partnerships and research grants.

Marquette University president Dr Michael R Lovell said: "We have committed to doubling our research in the next five years and we aspire for the centre to become a destination where renowned scientists, athletic trainers and elite athletes will come together.

"This project is a great example of how carrying out Marquette’s educational mission can play a significant role in spurring economic development, and we believe it will transform an important corridor in our city."

The proposed facility will feature locker rooms and office space for athletic programmes. It will combine indoor playing fields for the university’s lacrosse and soccer programmes and also house an indoor track and a world-class athletic performance research facility.
