Swedish construction firm NCC has secured a contract worth about SEK320m ($36m) from Salem Municipality in Sweden to build Fågelsången school and a sports hall.

Under the design-build contract, NCC will construct the school that can accommodate 500 students from the preschool class to grade 9.

NCC Building Sweden business manager Matti Virkki said: “NCC is one of Sweden’s leading builders of schools and we are bringing all our experience to this exciting project.

“The school and the sports hall, which feature an exciting architectural design, will – together with a large schoolyard – provide a good environment for the pupils and school staff.

“We will utilise many of NCC’s specialist competencies during the project, ranging from landscaping, construction and technical equipment to installation of solar panels and energy-saving measures.”

The school will be built on a split level with five floors and a technical installation room in the basement, covering a total area of about 7,000m². The floors of the building will be circular with a height difference between each semi-circle.

As part of the contract, the construction firm will deliver a sports hall located next to the school. The sports hall will accommodate 300 spectators across two-level stands. It will feature a solar power system, which will be installed on its roof.

Both school and the sports hall will be constructed to receive a Sweden Green Building Council 3.0, Silver rating.

Construction on the school is set to commence in September 2020 and is expected to be completed in early 2023.

Salem Municipal executive board chairman Lennart Kalderén said: “In the construction of Fågelsången school, we have paid close attention to location, landscape and nature.

“These will be beautiful, round buildings that will harmonize with the surrounding urban environment and the hilly landscape. About 500 pupils in Salem will soon have access to a wonderful place for learning and development.”
