The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) has given its approval for Continental/Ferguson Lansing’s revised Red Cedar Developmentplan, a $256m mixed-use project in the US city of Lansing.

The Red Cedar project is a 35.5-acre six building development, which will include student housing with 1,100 beds, 150 market-rate apartments, two hotels and an assisted living and memory-care facility.

The plan also includes space for restaurants, retail space and public park with a public amphitheatre complete with a connection to the Lansing River Trail.

The site is located on the long-abandoned Red Cedar golf course, located at 203 South Clippert Street on the eastern edge of Lansing, adjacent to the City of East Lansing. The site also connects the State Capitol to Michigan State University and surrounding communities along Michigan Avenue.

The market-rate apartments and senior living facility are expected to be completed by late summer, followed by the student housing, which could be ready by next year’s fall.

Construction on two dual-brand hotels including Hyatt House and AC Hotel by Marriott are scheduled to begin next year.

Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) said that the plan is consistent with its Strategic Plan to develop new places and activate vacant property. The plan aligns with the City of LansingEast Lansing and Lansing Township’s Corridor Improvement initiative to revitalise investment in the region’s high impact corridor.

Approval from MSF was the final one needed for the state’s portion of the Brownfield/TIF, as Lansing Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (LBRA) approved the local portion of the plan last year.

Continental/Ferguson executive project manager Christopher Stralkowski said: “Instrumental to our success was the dedication and support of Mayor Schor and former Mayor Virg Bernero, along with LEAP, the LBRA, Williamstown Township, all of the citizens participating in numerous community meetings and working closely with City Council members over the past seven years.

“We especially want to acknowledge and thank the residents for voting for redevelopment along with all past and current administrators who have supported this project. I want to acknowledge our partner Frank Kass, who has been tenacious and deeply committed to this enormous investment towards Lansing’s future.”
