The Northern Home Counties business of Morgan Sindall Construction has been selected as preferred bidder to deliver University of Hertfordshire’s new School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science (SPECS) development.

The company has secured the contract under the Southern Construction Framework (SCF), a collaborative framework for public bodies.

The new development will be situated on a central 165,000ft2 site at the College Lane Campus in South Hatfield.

It will be a five-storey steel-frame building comprising four separate internal blocks divided by a central atrium.

Morgan Sindall Construction’s team and its design team consisting of ADP Architecture and AECOM will design the new building using BIM 360.

The building will be designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and include several innovative elements.

To measure embodied and operational carbon, Morgan Sindall’s carbon calculator, Carbonica, will be utilised on the project.

University of Hertfordshire vice-chancellor Quintin McKellar said: “The new SPECs building is a key development for the University and this significant investment highlights our commitment towards providing world-class teaching, learning and research facilities for our community and partners.

“The University is also committed to becoming a zero-carbon institution and it is important that this new development has been tasked with delivering innovative sustainable solutions to help tackle climate change as a priority.”

Enabling works on the new SPECS development were completed last month, with main works scheduled to commence this month.
