Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has been selected by the Northumberland County Council as the primary contractor to construct six stations and car parks for the Northumberland Line in the UK.

The work under the £40m contract is slated to begin in early 2022.

The framework is subject to funding being confirmed by the government, and approval of the recently submitted Transport and Works Act Order  application.

Besides the new stations, the full project will see upgradation of 18 miles of track, three new footbridges and building of new signal locations between Ashington and central Newcastle.

Earlier this year, the Treasury signed-off £34m towards the final £166m project cost, with additional funding to come once the design works are finished.

This amount is being utilised to fund land acquisition, complete detailed design and for Network Rail to begin early works before appropriate planning approvals.

The whole scheme is expected to provide economic benefits of up to £470m.

Northumberland County Council is teaming up with the Department for Transport, Network Rail and Northern Trains to reintroduce regular passenger trains between Ashington and Newcastle by 2024.

Commenting on the selected contractor, the Northumberland County Council leader Glen Sanderson said: “As a hugely respected company with a proven track record, we’re confident they will carry out a first-class job on this extremely important and high-profile project.”

The first phase of the project includes new stations at Northumberland Park, Newsham, Bedlington and Ashington.

Further stations at Seaton Delaval and Blyth Bebside will be built in the second two, which could begin in 2024.
