The main contractor for the project was selected by Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust through the Southern Construction Framework, which is operated by Hampshire and Devon County councils.
Plans were submitted last year to expand the hospital’s A&E and provide modern healthcare facility for the people of East Devon.
The expansion and improvement works will proceed in phases to ensure operations of the hospital are get disrupted.
The extension will see a three-storey development located adjacent to the current building on Barrack Road.
The 3,500m2 building will enable the hospital to expand its clinical services. The facility will feature eight new resuscitation bays that will be served by a new plant room, a specialist children’s emergency department with paediatric bays, and a separate reception area with a larger waiting area.
