Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, has announced its decision to build what it claims to be the world’s most modern sawmill in Rauma, Finland, with an investment of approximately €200m.

Construction on the sawmill is planned to commence in spring of 2020 with completion scheduled in the third quarter of 2022.

However, the company noted that the planned timing for the sawmill could be impacted due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Expected to create around 100 direct jobs directly and around 500 jobs across its direct value chain, the Rauma sawmill will be equipped to produce around 750,000 cubic metres of pine sawn timber annually.

The firm plans to sell the sawn timber produced by the Rauma sawmill mainly to customers in Europe and Asia.

Metsä Fibre, which has already signed an agreement with Veisto for the supply of the new sawline, is negotiating with other equipment suppliers for the sawmill.

Separately, the company said it is progressing with the pre-engineering phase of the €1.5bn Kemi bioproduct mill and plans to announce its decision on the project in the autumn of 2020.

Employing 250 people directly and a total of 2,500 people across its direct value chain, the Kemi bioproduct mill will have the capacity to produce some 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp a year as well as other bioproducts.

Metsä Group president and CEO Ilkka Hämälä said: “Metsä Group’s strategic goals include increasing the value of Finnish forests, profitable growth together with customers, completely fossil-free mills, replacing the fossil based economy with renewable materials and increasing carbon stored in long-life wood products.

“The sawmill to be constructed in Rauma will contribute to the realisation of all these goals. The role of the mechanical forest industry is very important and we need to find ways to significantly improve its performance.”

“The pre-engineering of Kemi bioproduct mill has progressed well and we expect to reach the decision-making stage in the autumn of 2020, as the environmental permit process is finalised.”
