UK-based construction company Merit has secured a contract from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to construct a new £30m hospital in Berwick, UK.

The Northumberland County Council’s strategic planning committee had given the green light for plans to build a new hospital in December last year.

The project is estimated to create approximately 300 jobs annually during the construction phase and support the local economy.

Demolition work of the vacant parts of the existing hospital in Berwick is scheduled to commence this month, which will allow construction of the new hospital to commence on the northern end of the site in the Summer.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust stated that the new hospital is being built to transform health care and patient experience for the people living in the area.

Additionally, further funding has also been made available to make sure the new hospital building is fit for the future of health care.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Sir James Mackey said: “For too long, residents have needed a new hospital, which is fit to deliver 21st century health care, now and for future generations, and is equipped to embrace the latest technology to provide our patients with the highest quality of care.

“Our new hospital will also enable closer working with primary care, again improving patient care and experience.”

The organisation said that the existing infirmary, which was originally built in 1874, is no longer suitable to deliver modern-day healthcare services.

Therefore, the new purpose-built hospital is expected to re-provide all the existing services, as well as an accredited endoscopy suite to deliver health care closer to people’s homes, and house GP practice Well Close Medical Group.
