Located at 641 S. Lake Street, this school was built in the late 1800s and has been closed since 2007 due to low enrolment.

Furthermore, McShane will build a new two-story, 28,000ft2 building comprising 22 apartment units on the site.

McShane director of multi-family Susan Uhlarik said: “This project is a unique opportunity to take two historic school buildings that served the community well and convert them into housing to better support the community moving forward.

“We look forward to preserving the schools’ histories on these sites while repurposing them into developments that will fulfill current needs of the community.”

The renovations will feature addition of historical elements from the school buildings including trim, flooring, chalkboards, windows and doors..

The apartment units will come in one- to three-bedroom floorplans.

At least 30 % of the units will be allocated for renters with a 30% of area median income.

The buildings will offer amenities, such as shared laundry room, a community room, a computer lab and tenant storage.

The project, which is aiming to attain NGBS Silver Certification, is anticipated to be completed by October next year.

Cordogan Clark & Associates is serving as the architect for this project.
