UK-based construction firm Mace has signed £350m design and build contract with property company Sellar Property Group, on behalf of Great Western Developments, for the second stage of £825m Paddington Square mixed-use development in London.

Sellar is serving as the development partner for Great Western Developments on the Paddington Square project.

Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the Paddington Square development will comprise 360,000ft² of prime office space, 75,220ft² of retail and dining space, a 13,650ft² rooftop restaurant and a new 1.35-acre public square.

Sellar selected Focchi as cladding contractor as well as William Hare, an engineered steel solutions firm, as a steelwork contractor.

The first phase of the Paddington Square project involved the demolition of the former Royal Mail Sorting Office at 31 London Street and adjacent buildings on Praed Street, as well as piling works.

Sellar construction director Paul Flexney-Briscoe said: “This is an important moment for the development, one that keeps us on track towards a successful build and completion, and marks the point that our vision for Paddington Square starts to become a tangible reality.”

Excavation work is currently underway to prepare for the second stage of the construction, which is scheduled to commence following the signing of agreement of a final design, programme and cost plan. Paddington Square is scheduled to be completed in spring 2022.

Mace construction CEO Gareth Lewis said: “The agreement of this contract is a major milestone that brings us closer to the completion of the scheme. Like the Shard before it, Mace is very proud to be working alongside Sellar to bring their ambitious vision for this new site to life.”

The development will also involve £65m investment in London’s transport infrastructure, delivering a new Bakerloo Line ticket hall in Paddington Station.
