Mace, a UK-based construction company, has secured planning consent for a regeneration scheme in Stevenage Town Centre in England, UK.

In partnership with Stevenage Borough Council, Mace will transform a portion of the town centre to create housing, community facilities and new public spaces for the local residents.

The new scheme, dubbed SG1, will create approximately 1,864 new homes across a 14.5-acre public land. It will help to improve connectivity and links to central London, along with creating new spaces for local businesses.

According to the construction firm, the regeneration project will play an important role in the economic recovery of Stevenage post-Covid-19 pandemic.

It will create an integrated public services hub including new health facilities, library, retail and workspaces that will offer new opportunities for people and businesses to grow.

Mace said that the masterplan includes new green spaces and tree planting in new Garden Square adjacent to the hub and the Town Square.

The regeneration scheme will also create new streets, squares and public realm as well as improving pedestrian and cycle connections across the town.

Mace Group CEO Mark Reynolds said: “The approval marks the next stage in our plans to transform Stevenage with spaces that work for the entire local community, from families to businesses for decades to come.

“We are delighted to continue to work closely with Stevenage Borough Council in bringing the plans to reality.

“We look forward to beginning work on this landmark scheme that will create an inspiring new town centre for Stevenage, creating thousands of jobs and enabling economic growth.”

Subject to the outcome of a review by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, construction on the SG1 will be planned to commence in the coming months.

The new developments across the town are already underway, where Mace is now managing the improvements to the Town Square that will bring new places to eat and drink, flexible workspaces and conference facilities.
