Construction firm Lendlease has commenced construction on new £286m prison in Leicestershire, UK.

The new category C resettlement prison is planned to be built using eco-friendly, cutting-edge techniques.

Scheduled for completion by spring 2023, the prison is expected to create around 150 jobs and apprenticeships during construction and around 600 jobs once operational.

UK Minister of State for Prisons Lucy Frazer said: “The new jail at Glen Parva is another milestone in our plan to transform the prison estate, providing the environment needed to steer offenders away from crime.

“As well as rehabilitating prisoners and keeping the public safer, the prison will be a major boost to the local economy. Hundreds of jobs will be created during and after construction, sending a clear signal that this government is committed to supporting communities and infrastructure across the country.”

Lendlease Europe construction managing director Simon Gorski said: “The new prison at Glen Parva is the second prison being built by this Government alongside the new jail at Wellingborough in Northamptonshire.”

Last year, Kier Group commenced construction on the £253m resettlement prison in Wellingborough, UK.

The new prison and the Wellingborough prison are jointly expected to create 3,360 modern, safe and secure prison places, which will be in addition to the UK government’s £2.5bn funding programme that aims to create 10,000 modern prisons places.

As part of the plan, four more new prisons are planned to be built across England over the next six years.

The category C resettlement prisons will provide prisoners with the opportunity to develop their skills in order to reduce the scope of reoffending.
