Kier has secured a contract from Croydon Health Services NHS Trust to deliver a £10.4m refurbishment project at Croydon University Hospital.

The scope of work under the contract involves conversion of ground floor of the Jubilee South Wing into a new 22-bed intensive treatment unit (ITU) with four isolation suites.

It also includes relocation of the dedicated Stroke Unit of the hospital to the Jubilee North Wing.

By creating more bed spaces, the refurbishment of the hospital will help improve patient care for the seriously ill individuals.

The project will improve natural light, integration of new equipment and enhanced facilities, such as quiet rooms, en-suites, as well as waiting areas for families.

Sustainable methods, such as procuring recycled materials will be adopted.

The company stated that work on the project will be executed in a live hospital environment.

The surgical theatres and the neighbouring wards will continue to run throughout the project.

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust chief operating officer Lee McPhail said: “This multi-million-pound development will transform the care environment in one of London’s biggest boroughs so that people with the most serious injuries and illnesses can get life-dependent specialist care close to where they live.

“Our intensive care team have been at the heart of our Covid-19 response and have continued to care for people in our community long before the pandemic in a facility that was originally built more than four decades ago.

“Whilst the Trust has made many improvements during this time, the new build will increase the size of the unit by half and ensure that our community can get the highest standards of care in a modern and comforting care environment that our patients – and staff – deserve.”
