Construction and infrastructure services provider Kier has secured an early works contract for phase 2a of High Speed 2 (HS2) project.

Known as Enabling Civil Works – Package 2 (ECW2), the £50m programme will be awarded in two stages and the company was awarded the first stage of work.

The works will be awarded through the government’s existing Crown Commercial Services Construction Works and Associated Services framework.

The programme includes a range of early works to minimise disruption during the main build stage of the project as well as major highways works and associated utility diversions.

A range of environmental and other surveys along the 57km stretch of route and the survey, design and construction work for a new bridge on the M6 will also be included in the programme.

The second stage of the work on the programme is scheduled to be awarded in 2022.

The HS2 project is expected to transform the transportation links between the country’s major cities and support its transition to net zero carbon emissions.

HS2 Procurement and Supply Chain director Andrew Cubitt said: “Kier will play a vital role in delivering the next stage of Britain’s new high speed railway, taking the route north from Birmingham to Crewe and I’m really pleased to welcome them to the team.

“HS2’s Phase 2a represents a massive opportunity for businesses in the north of England and across the UK in the short term, and in the longer term it will speed up journeys for trains bound for places like Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and the North West, and release much-needed extra capacity on the existing mainline.”

Kier, as part of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial and BAM (EKFB) joint venture, is providing civil engineering works on an 80km section of the new high speed rail line between Chiltern Tunnel and Long Itchington Wood.

In a separate development, HS2 Minister Andrew Stephenson has unveiled new designs for the public realm around the new Old Oak Common station in West London.

The plans include creation of a new public parkland for local residents, workers and rail users.

Accessible through Old Oak Common Lane, the new park will have a wide range of seating, such as benches, low walls, chairs and tables.
