UK-based construction and infrastructure services provider Kier has secured a £64.3m contract from Cardiff Council to construct Fitzalan High School in Wales’ capital city Cardiff, the UK.

The company has been involved right from the design phase of the new school and has been executing enabling works since July last year.

It has procured the contract through the South East & Mid Wales collaborative construction framework.

Located on Leckwith Road to the south-west of the city, the project will provide advanced teaching facilities for 1,500 11 to 16 years old schoolchildren along with a sixth form.

Fitzalan High School will comprise two interconnecting buildings, with 88 classrooms, nine science laboratories, drama studio, an immersive room, sports hall and dining area.

It will also include an 1,800-seat multi-function hall with an atrium and learning spaces to support vocational training, such as construction.

The school will also comprise sporting facilities including 3G/multi-use sport pitches, four multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and grass, and a 25m four-lane swimming pool.

It is jointly funded by Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government as part of its Band B 21st Century Schools and Education investment programme.

Kier said that the new school will be constructed to achieve BREEAM excellent standard. It is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2022/23 academic year.

Kier Regional Building Western & Wales operations director Jason Taylor said: “This is a significant project for the local community and throughout the construction of this new school, we will look to leave a lasting legacy, by creating job and training opportunities, working with our local supply chain partners and engaging with pupils and showcasing the wide range of job roles currently available within the construction industry.”
