Kier has secured a pre-construction services contract from the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) to deliver HMP Glasgow, a new prison to replace Victorian-era HMP Barlinnie.

To be constructed on a 54-acre site in Provanmill, HMP Glasgow will serve as a modern prison facility once it completes in 2026.

The new prison is expected to be designed to deliver safety and security by leveraging technology and design innovation

Kier and its supply chain will start the pre-construction work in collaboration with SPS.

Employing a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach, Kier will explore on delivering a net zero carbon facility, which also would operate as ‘smart building’ leveraging automated processes and technology to support the operation of the new prison.

SPS chief executive Teresa Medhurst said: “We are delighted to award the contract for preconstruction services to Kier Construction which represents a significant step forward in delivering the new HMP Glasgow. The investment that we have received from the Scottish Government means that we can continue to develop a prison estate, which is fit for the 21st century.”

Meanwhile in a separate development, Babcock International Group has selected Kier BAM Joint Venture (KBJV) to support the delivery of a revamp project at Devonport’s 10 Dock facility in Plymouth, Devon.

This appointment comes after an earlier announcement by Babcock of a series of key infrastructure projects at Devonport where facilities will be developed over the next decade to meet the requirements of the UK’s Royal Navy.

KBJV has been awarded the NEC4 Framework contract for the Main Works Civils scope on the 10 Dock Project.

The project features redevelopment of a dry dock for nuclear submarines, demolition of current buildings and construction of new ones to support the submarine maintenance programme of the Royal Navy.

The scope includes all mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation technology works within the new dock building, ground anchors, new service subways to support submarines in dry dock positions, and a new dividing headwall within the dock.
