UK-based construction, services and property group Kier has broken ground on Mayfield School in Portsmouth.
Located on the eastern playing field of the current school site, the project forms part of the UK Department of Education (DfE) Priority Schools Building Programme, which aims to address the needs of schools that require urgent repair.

The three-storey building will feature an innovation laboratory and will cater for over 1,200 primary and secondary school children. It will feature 74 classrooms, modern arts facilities, a spinning studio, and a revamped pre-school nursery.
Additionally, the 9,422m² building will retain the school’s heritage such as the portico entrance. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2021.
Kier Regional Building Southern operations director Trevor White said: “Breaking ground marks an important milestone for Mayfield School and its transformation programme that will provide state-of-the-art facilities for its pupils.
“Working collaboratively with the Department for Education and Portsmouth City Council, we look forward to delivering this project for the school and wider local community.”

By GlobalDataKier is also planning to reposition the existing war memorial plaques into prime locations within the new building.
DfE project director Tim Sluman said: “The DfE is delighted to be working closely with Kier, Portsmouth City Council and the School and Governing body, on this exciting new school building fully funded by the DfE’s Priority School Building Programme.
“The new school building will provide the community of Mayfield School with a fit for purpose ‘all through school’, designed in close collaboration with the School/Governing body and Portsmouth City Council to deliver their exciting curriculum and specialisms for many years to come.”
