UK-based construction company Kier has commenced construction on the £21.2m secondary school in Botley, Hampshire in the UK.

Scheduled for completion in autumn 2021, the new secondary school, named Deer Park School, will provide teaching facilities for approximately 1,000 pupils.

Kier Regional Building Southern operations director Trevor White said: “We are delighted to be breaking ground on this vitally needed new school. Deer Park is set to be ideally situated in the heart of the community and provide over 1,000 pupils with excellent learning facilities.

“We will deliver this latest school utilising our local supply chain, enabling us to provide training opportunities for those interested in a career within the built environment.

“We will engage with the local community throughout the duration of this project as we are committed to leaving a legacy in areas in which we build.”

The three-storey main school building will have a gross internal floor space of 6573m². The building’s focal point will be a central triple-height atrium.

The site will also comprise a sports building with a gross internal floor area of 1,092m². It will feature a four-court sports hall, activity studio and changing facilities.

Work is a part of a contract awarded earlier to Kier by Hampshire County Council on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE).

Kier is also working to deliver several other schools, which include a new school and community hub in Deeside, a new academy for children with autism in Sunderland, and an extension at Hethersett primary school in Norfolk.

Recently, Kier Highways was selected by the Birmingham City Council as the preferred bidder to manage the 15-month interim highway services contract.

The contract will include the city traffic operations, planned and reactive maintenance, inspections and winter services.
