JSW Utkal Steel Limited (JUSL), a fully-owned subsidiary of JSW Steel Limited, has secured an environmental permit from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) for the construction of an Integrated Steel Plant (ISP) in the Indian state of Odisha.

Once the plant becomes operational, it would have a 13.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) crude steel capacity, reported Moneycontrol.com.

Phase-wise work on the project will commence following the handing over of the land to JUSL by the Odisha government, stated the company.

A part of the $13bn JSW Group, JUSL would incur a capital expenditure valued at around ($8.53bn) Rs650bn for the “modern, green and environment-friendly” ISP project.

According to the company, the “mega project will generate huge employment opportunities in the region, which in turn will boost the economy of Odisha state. The project is one of the largest in the manufacturing sector in the country and MoEF&CC accorded the EC after successful public hearings.”

As per the environment impact assessment (EIA) of the project, JUSL will bear costs for environmental protection and undertake mitigation measures.

Meanwhile, JSW Group is constructing a steel plant near Paradip port where South Korean steel major POSCO was interested to build a 12-mtpa steel plant, reported The Hindu Business Line.

The JSW project needs 2,950 acres, of which 2,700 acres was bought by the government in 2013 for the Posco project.

However, this project failed to take off due to several reasons including delay in getting environmental approvals and objections by the local residents.
