The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has awarded a contract to the US-based engineering services provider Jacobs to provide strategic consultancy services for the proposed new high-speed railway lines between Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö in Sweden.
Trafikverket is planning to develop main railway lines between Stockholm-Malmö and Stockholm-Gothenburg.

The lines include the East Link for Järna-Linköping (approximately 150km), Göteborg-Borås (approximately 60km) and Hässleholm-Lund (approximately 70km).
Jacobs said that the initial projects could form part of Swedish Transport Administration’s 660km high-speed rail network, which is estimated to cost of $23.8bn.
The projects are aimed at connecting the country’s southern parts to create additional capacity while reducing inter-city journey times.

Under the terms of the contract, Jacobs will be responsible for providing technical advice and services across planning, system, design and delivery of the three projects.

In addition to improving connectivity between the major cities, the new high-speed railway lines are expected to increase capacity and resiliency in the railway system; create more sustainable travel and freight transport and promote greater access to international markets.
Swedish Transport Administration Program director Peter Uneklint said: “Today, our main lines are overcrowded, and greater capacity will add to our sustainable transportation solutions.
“Expanding the railway network will bring Sweden closer together and create new opportunities for people and businesses.”
Last year, construction services company Implenia bagged a contract to deliver twin-track expansion of the railway line between Varberg and Hamra on the west coast of Sweden.
The scope of the contract, which is worth SEK3.5bn (£298m), includes the planning and construction of a 2.8km conventional tunnel, a 450m cut-and-cover tunnel, a 1.3km cutting, several bridges, a new railway station and a total of 2.7km of track, plus a freight train station.
