Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx have launched two requests for qualifications (RFQs) for advance tunnelling work on the Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension in Canada.
The Scarborough Subway Extension is an 8km extension of Line 2 from Kennedy Station to McCowan Road/Sheppard Avenue whereas the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is a 9.2km extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT (future TTC Line 5).

The two parties are seeking bids for the scope of work to design, build and finance the tunnels.
The scope of the work at the Scarborough Subway Extension Tunnel include tunnelling works for the subway extension from Kennedy Station to McCowan Road/Sheppard Avenue, and design and construction of launch and extraction shafts, tunnels, as well as headwalls for emergency exit buildings stations.
For the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Tunnel, the selected firms will be responsible for the tunnelling works for approximately 6km of the 9.2km light rail transit extension, as well as design and construct launch and extraction shafts, tunnels, and headwalls for emergency exit buildings and stations.
Work for the two projects also includes the supply of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and installation of segmental precast concrete tunnel liners as well as activities necessary to build the tunnel such as utility relocations, temporary power supply, among others.

By GlobalDataFollowing processing the RFQs, IO and Metrolinx will shortlist the teams, which would further proceed and apply for a Request for Proposals (RFP) in summer 2020.
The Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension forms part of the four priority transit projects that were announced last year by the Province for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Planning is underway for the four projects, which include the Ontario Line project and the Yonge North Subway Extension. The Ontario Line is scheduled for commissioning as early as 2027.
