It plans to award this month a contract for construction of a 1.3GW coal-powered plant in Talcher, Odisha, reported the publication, citing an official aware of the matter.

The company is also planning to award contracts for two earlier halted expansion projects at its Lara and Singrauli sites in central India, the official said.

For the first time in six years, NTPC is planning to call for bids for new coal-fired plants.

This move comes after it decided to focus only on greenfield renewable capacities in an effort to take up its fossil fuel and renewable generation mix to 50:50 by 2032 from the current fossil fuel share of 80%.

However, in the event of the worsening power crisis, as there is mismatch between supply and demand, the company is planning for fossil fuel-based plants in an effort to maintain grid stability and frequency.

At Talcher, NTPC plans for 1.3GW plant with two supercritical units of 660MW each.

At Lara in Chhattisgarh state, NTPC may plan to add three 800MW units and in Singrauli, Uttar Pradesh state, it plans to replace the current 2GW with a new facility.

Although NTPC planned for 4GW coal capacity in Lara, it is currently operating 1.6GW.
