Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi, India, has plans for a major expansion, which will see an improvement in passenger capacity handling from 20 million passengers per year to 40 million.
Asia’s sixth busiest airport, the Delhi airport expansion includes the construction of an additional runway, a new terminal, and cutting-edge facilities, which will increase passenger handling capacity.

Upon final expansion, Delhi airport will be the first airport in India to sport four runways.
The expansion plan includes the construction of a new terminal, T4, which will see completion by 2025, reports Live Hindustan. The use of T4 will only be for international passengers to help reduce airport traffic congestion.
New taxiways will be constructed for existing terminals T1 and T3, with T1’s area being expanded to accommodate additional lanes to its departure ramp to improve traffic circulation.
Terminal 3’s international transfer area will be increased along with the addition of a seventh check-in island to the terminal.

By GlobalDataBy 2022, a fourth runway will be constructed, which is expected to help in improving the airport’s hourly flight handling capacity, while also cutting down ‘wait time’ for both approaching and departing flights.
Airport expansion plans also include building a first of its kind ‘dual elevated cross taxiway’ for the purpose of reducing the time taken for aircraft taxiing.
A separate corridor will also be constructed for cargo movement to and from the airport, to segregate heavy vehicles from passenger vehicles.
