The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (OAH) has issued the license for building two power units with Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors at the Paks II nuclear power plant.

This licence was issued following a review of the design documentation.

For the first time in the EU, a power unit with such reactors has been issued a building license.

The licence indicates that the new nuclear power plant units align with the Hungarian and European safety standards.

The Paks II project will feature automated active and passive safety systems, including a reinforced concrete containment with a double wall structure and a core catcher to stop the release of radioactive substances from the active zone in case of a beyond-design accident.

Hungary Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó said: “The Paks II NPP project is taking another leap forward. The construction license confirms that the project complies with the international and Hungarian safety requirements. It is entirely feasible that Hungary will have two new power units by 2030, thus ensuring the stability of energy supply.”

Rosatom’s engineering company, ASE JSC is the chief contractor for this nuclear project.

The Paks II NPP project director and ASE JSC vice president Alexander Merten said: “A number of key licenses issued by the Hungarian authority, the OAH, for the nuclear power plant construction project is an important step towards the transition of the project to the construction stage of two state-of-the-art, safest possible nuclear power units with Generation III+ reactors, which will ensure Hungary’s stable and financially affordable electricity supply until the end of the century.”

The Paks II is a turnkey project. The Hungarian-Russian intergovernmental agreement was signed in January 2014 for development of this new nuclear power plant.

The EPC contract was signed on 9 December 2014.

Preparations are underway for building the new nuclear power plant.

Rosatom’s portfolio of overseas orders includes 34 units at different stages of implementation in 11 countries.
