HS2, the developer of the UK’s High Speed 2 project, has secured planning consent from London Borough of Camden to build construction site accommodation and Camden’s new Construction Skills Centre in the UK.

The new building will be constructed on the former Maria Fidelis School site and used during the construction of the new high-speed station.

Plans for the new centre will also include a reconfigured facility below the bespoke site accommodation.

Mace Dragados joint venture (MDJV), HS2’s Euston station construction partner, will install the temporary modular building in 2022.

To be operated by Camden Council, the new Construction Skills Centre will house 30 staff and 150 students.

This building will feature classrooms, workshop spaces, an IT room and also accommodate a range of technical equipment.

The building’s size and shape has been designed to support both HS2 site accommodation and Construction Skills Centre on the site.

The construction site accommodation will be a modular building, which will be built by Premier Modular at their site in East Yorkshire.

Fraser Brown Mackenna Architects has designed the exterior appearance of the building.

Once open, the current temporary skills centre located in Kings Cross will relocate to the new site.

Mace Dragados JV stakeholders and communities director Jackie Duncan said: “Our site accommodation is critical to enable us to provide welfare and desk space for thousands of workers who will be helping us build HS2’s Euston station.

“Having the Construction Skills Centre located within the building will enable us to develop close links with the students and staff at the centre and provide opportunities for us to share our skills and experience in the construction sector with the local community.”

The company’s construction site office and welfare facility will provide more than 5,700m2 space for the team.

It will also include welfare and changing facilities that will have the capacity to handle nearly 2,500 on-site workers.
