Greater Binghamton Airport in the US has undergone a significant transformation, with the completion of a modernisation project aimed at improving the passenger experience.

This initiative is part of a broader economic development strategy for New York’s Southern Tier region.

Valued at $54m, the project received a substantial financial boost from the state governor’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, contributing $32m to the overhaul.

The renovation, which created more than 500 jobs, has reimagined the airport’s main terminal to streamline passenger flow and integrate the natural aesthetics of the Southern Tier into its design.

Additionally, the airport’s main approach road has been redeveloped, and the general aviation terminal has been consolidated with the main passenger terminal to enhance the overall traveller experience.

Greater Binghamton Airport, established in 1945, accommodates over 36,000 enplanements annually and is served by airlines such as Delta.

It serves as a crucial link for local enterprises, including Lockheed Martin and Binghamton University. However, the airport’s primary terminal had not seen significant updates in over two decades.

According to a study conducted by New York’s State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the airport’s annual economic impact is estimated at more than $56m.

NYSDOT commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said: “The spectacular transformation of the Greater Binghamton Airport is a further manifestation of governor [Kathy] Hochul’s vision to create a 21st-century transportation system that connects communities, fosters growth and improves quality of life.

“The Southern Tier now has a modern gateway that will further fuel the region’s economy and make it easier for visitors from around the world to come and experience all that this beautiful region has to offer.”

The modernisation project introduced a lodge-like atmosphere throughout the facility, with wood features that echo the forested hillsides encircling the airport.

The design of entryways now allows passengers unobstructed views through the terminal to the hilltops and forests beyond.

Improvements encompassed a new canopy and entry portals, reconfigured ticketing and baggage areas, renovated departure lounges, and updated baggage claim sections.

New York senator Chuck Schumer said: “The Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law has helped the Greater Binghamton Airport reach new heights. The Greater Binghamton Airport is a gateway for commerce for the Southern Tier’s tourism industry and a vital connector for residents and visitors.

“I’m proud to deliver over $15m in federal funding to help get the airport’s transformative terminal renovation off the ground. A modern facility, with state-of-the-art accommodations and equipment, is essential to delivering a safe and comfortable experience to travellers, growing its passenger base, and helping the Southern Tier economy soar.”
