US-based infrastructure company Granite has been appointed as construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) for the $257m rehabilitation project in California, US.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has awarded the contract for the rehabilitation project, which is on State Route 99 from 0.32km south of the El Dorado Street Overcrossing to the Clinton Avenue Overcrossing (post 34.1 to 39.3kms) in Fresno County.

The company said that the initial phase of the contract is the construction management portion worth at $3m.

The rehabilitation project includes reconstruct of 5.1km of the roadway with concrete pavement and alleviate road traffic backups through downtown Fresno with improved interchange configurations.

The project also includes the construction of auxiliary lanes, retaining walls, and pumping plants.

Under the contract, Granite will be responsible for the replacement or widening of six bridges and several retaining and sound walls to accommodate highway widening along with an existing Union Pacific bridge.

The company said that the drainage facilities within the project region will also be replaced along with two pumping plants.

The proposed work on the project will include replacing the El Dorado Street, Belmont Avenue, and Olive Avenue Overcrossings and the Kerman Branch Underpass railroad structure.

It also includes widening of the Nielsen Avenue and McKinley Avenue Undercrossings and removing of the Teilman Avenue Overcrossing.

Granite regional vice president Carter Rohrbough said: “We are honoured to once again team up with Caltrans and improve transportation in Fresno.

“Being invited to be a part of the design and planning of this project provides Granite the opportunity to bring more value to Caltrans to ultimately support our communities and their traffic needs.”

Furthermore, the work on the construction management (CM) portion of the contract is slated to commence by the end of the year, with the general contractor (GC) phase is expected to start in the mid of 2024.
