Granite has been selected for the approximately $55m Knik-Goose Bay Road Reconstruction Phase I project near Wasilla, Alaska, US

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region has awarded the contract to the company.

The project, which will be financed by the federal government, will decrease traffic congestion and boost safety along the corridor.

The award is expected to be included in Granite’s second-quarter CAP.

Granite is responsible for reconstruction of four miles of Knik Goose Bay Road, from Fairview Loop to Centaur Avenue.

The four-mile stretch will see two-lane being reconstructed to a four-lane divided highway facility.

The scope of the contract also covers drainage and intersection improvements, grading, paving, pathways, illumination, and signalisation.

Granite vice president of regional operations Derek Betts said: “Upgrading Knik-Goose Bay Road is a priority for the local community and the State of Alaska.

“This corridor currently deals with a lot of congestion and other poor performance because of limited capacity and high density of driveway access. Expanding four miles of the roadway to four lanes will provide a major benefit to the community and travelers. We are looking forward to collaborating with Central Region DOT&PF to execute a successful project and provide necessary upgrades to this major arterial highway.”

Material required for the construction of the project will be provided by various Granite facilities.

The Lucas Quarry will provide 5,000t of riprap, the Wolf Aggregate facility will deliver 650,000t of borrow, and 75,000t of hot-mix asphalt will come from the Palmer Hot Plant.

The project is anticipated to start in August 2022, and expected to complete in Q3 2024.
