UK-based civil engineering contractor Graham has been appointed as the preferred contractor by Imperial College London to construct a new School of Public Health (SPH) at its White City Campus in West London.

The nine-storey building, which will provide approximately 58,000ft2 of space, will support leading research, education and community engagement in health and wellbeing.

The multidisciplinary hub, designed by Allies and Morrison, is said to be part of the college’s major new campus in West London.

It will bring all the world-class researchers, businesses and partners from academia to work together, share ideas and turn the research into benefits for society.

Graham stated that SPH will occupy up to the 7th floor of the building, of which two floors will be for teaching space – with small study rooms, common space, and a large lecture area.

The remaining five floors will be office space and include meeting rooms for staff, basement plant space for changing facilities, and bike storage.

The ground floor level of the building will feature shared space with open-plan meeting areas.

Imperial College London Medicine Faculty dean Jonathan Weber said: “The development of an innovative and interconnected School of Public Health at the College’s White City Campus will allow our researchers to pioneer approaches to society’s most pressing healthcare challenges.

“They will use the power of data and technology to gain insight into some of the most complex issues in population health and develop evidence-based solutions to major public health challenges that affect communities here in the UK and around the world.”

Furthermore, the construction work on the new building is scheduled to take about two-years and the completion is expected in spring 2023.
