GMI Construction Group has started construction work on the first phase of the £80m worth Hillthorn Business Park project in Washington, Sunderland, UK.

In 2021, Legal and General awarded a contract to GMI to build seven of ten commercial units, as part of the first phase of the industrial development.

The units, which range from 21,000ft² to 83,000ft² in size, are expected to be completed by November this year.

The industrial development is being delivered in two phases and includes 620,000ft² space for industrial and advanced manufacturing.

The project is expected to create around 1,600 jobs in Sunderland. Legal & General’s Industrial Property Investment Fund is financing, procuring, and delivering the development.

Anticipated to be completed in 2023, Hillthorn complements the adjacent Turbine Business Park and the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP).

The business park is designed to boost the local economic growth by supporting the needs of storage, distribution businesses, industrial and advanced manufacturing.

Sunderland City Council leader Councillor Graeme Miller said: “I’m so pleased to see Hillthorn Business Park moving forward.

“This is a strategically significant site, that is superbly positioned and will ensure that the city unlocks its potential as a hub for advanced manufacturing.

“It builds on the fantastic relationship we have formed with Legal & General and will allow us to create many more high-quality jobs for local people, and opportunities for local businesses as we move through the construction phase of this project.”
