The State Government of Victoria in Australia has announced the near completion of the Gippsland Line Upgrade.
This development is set to provide enhanced train services for the Gippsland communities, following a construction bout scheduled for later this year.
The upgrade includes a new train control system and improvements to the line’s infrastructure, enabling safer and more frequent train operations.
The Victorian Budget for 2025-26 has allocated funds to deliver train services every 40 minutes along the Traralgon Line upon the project’s completion.
Due to the upgrade works and other ongoing projects affecting the metropolitan network, coaches will replace trains on the Traralgon and Bairnsdale lines for parts or the entirety of the journey from 14 June until 13 August.
During this period, crews will be engaged in installing the new signalling system. This involves laying cables and setting up trackside signalling equipment between Drouin and Traralgon.

The Gippsland Line Upgrade is part of a collaborative effort between the Victorian and Australian governments.
The two governments have previously delivered station upgrades, track duplication for more reliable services, a new bridge over the Avon River in Stratford, and have made it possible for modern VLocity trains to reach Bairnsdale.
The Department of Transport and Planning is currently developing a new timetable for the Gippsland Line, with details on the new services to be announced in due course.
In March 2025, the Victorian Government started construction on the Suburban Rail Loop, with works commencing at a tunnel boring machine launch site in Clarinda.
