Construction management firm Gilbane Building Company has commenced the construction phase activities at 60 First Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US.

The 224,000ft2 build out and expansion project is begin developed at the former Sears building located at the Cambridgeside Galleria.

The project will offer Class A mixed-use office and lab space in the East Cambridge, Kendall neighbourhood.

It involves removal of the existing building’s top floor as well as the roof structure and addition of three new floors.

All the existing steel frame will be structurally reinforced to accommodate the new building.

The new building will also include balcony on the fifth floor, overlooking a garden with water features and pedestrian walkways in front of the shopping mall.

The project will also include a two-story penthouse on the roof of the building with architectural louver features to conceal all mechanical equipment to reduce sound transmissions.

Work on the complex expansion project is planned to be completed by early 2023.

The company stated that the 60 First Street was acquired in 2017 by the development team Anchor Line Partners and Northwood Investor.
