Officials at the Japanese Investment Fund have pledged financial support for the $114m Shipka Tunnel in the Gabrovo region under the Balkan Mountains between Turnovo and Dtara Zagora in Bulgaria. The Japanese authorities are already financing a consultancy covering feasibility studies and preliminary design work. Five construction firms from Japan, Austria and France have already shown interest in building the 3.2km long road tunnel
