Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding has broken ground on a new 19,000ft2 machine shop at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, US.

Upon its completion, the 300ft-long building will provide shipbuilders with access to two cranes that have capacity to lift 5 tonnes and 30 tonnes, respectively.

The other end of the building will have offices, restrooms, a lunchroom, and a tool room.

The facility will mainly support Bay’s repair business.

Planning for the new building began nine months ago.

ACE Building Services is anticipated to finish construction later next year.

Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding vice president and general manager Craig Perciavalle said: “We are modernising our infrastructure and replacing some very old buildings.

“We are fortunate to have a great partner in A.C.E. [Building Services] to help us grow, but also to do so in a way that complements our surrounding community.”

Perciavalle added that this project is the final aspect of the $70m investment since 2020.

Currently, the team at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding is constructing two LNG barges, both larger than the recently delivered LNG barge.
