Enel Green Power, a subsidiary of Italian energy company Enel, has started construction on a solar and storage project in Texas, US.

The Lily solar + storage project is located southeast of Dallas in Kaufman County, Texas, which includes 146MW solar facility and a 50MW battery storage system. The project is expected to be operational by next summer.

The Lily solar facility will be powered by 421,400 bifacial solar panels, which can generate more than 367GWh of clean energy each year. This energy will be transmitted to the grid and will also be stored in the co-located battery storage system.

The system can store up to 75MWh and will supply the stored energy whenever the solar generation is low or balance the grid at periods of high demand.

Enel said that it plans to install at least 1GW in storage systems across new renewable sources including solar and wind projects from now on, to improve the yield of its projects.

Initially, the Lily solar project was developed by Red River Renewable Energy, a joint venture between the subsidiaries of Sun Chase Power and MAP Energy.

Enel Green Power CEO Antonio Cammisecra said: “This substantial commitment to deploy battery storage capacity underscores Enel’s leadership in constructing innovative hybrid projects that will drive the ongoing decarbonisation of the power sector in the United States and around the world.

“The Lily solar plus storage project highlights the huge potential of renewable energy growth and represents the future of power generation, which will increasingly be made up by sustainable, flexible plants that provide zero-carbon electricity while boosting grid stability.”

Enel stated that the construction process at Lily will follow best practices aimed at lowering the impact of construction on the environment.

It also claims to be exploring the multi-purpose land-use model at the site to bring mutually beneficial agricultural practices.

Particularly, the company plans to test the growing of crops under the panels as well as cultivating groundcover plants that support pollinators to benefit nearby farmlands.

Enel also stated that it is following strict regulations including social distancing, strict travel restrictions among employees, work place sanitisation, etc.
