EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare (EDIH) has secured a contract from the Government of Nova Scotia to design, build, finance and maintain the Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre in Halifax, Canada, which is part of the QEII New Generation project.

To be developed at a cost of C$259.4m ($197.3m), the new outpatient centre is expected to be operational in August 2023. The contract includes 30-years of maintenance.

The Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre will occupy 134,000ft² of space along with an associated site works located on a 15-acre site in the Bayers Lake Business Park.

It will include clinics such as physio and occupational therapy, high blood pressure, diabetes and orthopaedic assessment, 17 examination rooms, 24 dialysis stations, diagnostic imaging (x-rays and ultrasounds), blood collection, post-surgery or post-treatment follow-up appointments.

Each year nearly 28,000 clinical visits and 30,000 x-ray and blood collection visits are expected at the new outpatient centre.

The primary users of the outpatient centre are expected to be 40% of the residents living in rural communities along with outside the downtown core with easy access off the highways.

Nova Scotia Health Authority integrated health services vice-president Paula Bond said: “Today marks a major step forward within the QEII New Generation Project. The new Community Outpatient Centre in Bayers Lake will provide Nova Scotians easier access to modern, high-quality supports and care, closer to home, for generations to come.”

The project is the first P3 healthcare project in the province and is one of the elements of the broader QEII New Generation Project, a phased, multi-year programme that aims to redesign and build healthcare infrastructure in Halifax.
