EDF Renewables Ireland, a wholly owned subsidiary of EDF Group, has commenced construction on three new solar power projects in Wexford and Kilkenny.
The projects include the 5MW Coolroe solar farm in Coolroe, Ballycullane and 8MW Blusheens solar project in Killinick, Co Wexford, and the 4MW Curraghmartin solar farm at Curraghmartin, Carrigeen in Co Kilkenny.

These solar farms are claimed to be first utility-scale solar power projects to commence construction in Ireland following EDF Renewables’ acquisition of Wexford Solar last year that include eight projects with more than 100MW of power across the country.
Construction work on the three projects is estimated to take nearly ten months of time, with completion expected in February 2022 at the earliest.
Upon completion, the solar projects will have a combined capacity of 17MW and will supply enough electricity to cater to over 6,600 households.
EDF Renewables Ireland development head Kevin Daly said: “Developing a diverse renewable energy mix is crucial if Ireland is to achieve its 2030 emissions targets, and these three new solar farms will make an important contribution to meeting these goals and providing consumers with affordable, low-carbon electricity.

In July last year, Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has awarded a contract to a consortium comprising France’s EDF Renewables and China’s JinkoPower to develop a 2GW solar power plant in Abu Dhabi, the UAE.
