Eastern Concrete, a Suffolk, UK-based concrete company, has been awarded a contract to supply concrete to Sizewell C, the upcoming low-carbon nuclear power station in the county.

Eastern Concrete will deliver over 120,000m³ of concrete for the next two years, enabling the early-stage construction of Sizewell C.

This development is part of a broader regional investment by Sizewell C, which has seen £330m ($449.3m) awarded to 77 suppliers across the eastern region of England.

The concrete will be delivered from Eastern Concrete’s batching plant in Leiston, which was established in 2023 on Eastlands Industrial Estate. Later, supplies will be made from an additional plant situated at the construction site itself.

These materials will lend support for nonnuclear construction activities such as site roads, park-and-ride facilities, and all the temporary buildings necessary for project execution.

Eastern Concrete, headquartered in Stowmarket, previously provided materials for Sizewell B’s dry fuel store in 2014. This new contract builds on its legacy of providing for the region’s nuclear facilities.

Sizewell C will be a 3.2GW nuclear power station, projected to supply electricity to up to six million homes over a minimum of 60 years and reduce carbon emissions by nine million tonnes annually.

Since preliminary construction commenced in January 2024, the project is stated to have been meeting its early milestones on time and within budget.

Following the UK government’s confirmation of the project earlier this month and an additional investment of £14.2bn, a final investment decision is anticipated in the coming months to reveal the private investors involved.

Eastern Concrete managing director Tom Baker said: “This is the biggest contract I’ve ever secured and the highlight of my career. I always wanted to be involved with the construction of Sizewell C, and I’m thrilled we’re able to expand our local workforce. By paying local salaries, we’re helping drive a circular economy that benefits other businesses in the area. This is fantastic news for East Suffolk.

“Sizewell have come good on their commitment. They said they would support local businesses and that’s exactly what they’ve done.”

Sizewell C site delivery director Damian Leydon added: “It’s fantastic to see this contract creating jobs locally while drawing on the expertise of a regional supplier. We’ve pledged to invest £4.4bn in the East of England, and this partnership clearly demonstrates that commitment.”

Balfour Beatty, Bouygues Travaux Publics, and Laing O’Rourke have recently entered into an agreement with Sizewell C to execute the main civil works at the upcoming power station.
