Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract to an undisclosed company for AED450m ($122.5m) upgrade work at the Falcon Junction.

The work forms part of phase III of the RTA’s Al Shandagha Roads Corridor Improvement Project, which is estimated to cost AED5.35bn ($1.45bn).

Bordered by Al Khaleej, Khaled bin Al Waleed and Al Ghubaiba Streets, the Falcon Junction upgrade project will involve the construction of 10 surface junctions with work scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.

Upon completion, the project will link with Shandagha Bridge (Infinity) Northwards.

The RTA director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer said: “The Falcon Junction Improvement Project is part of Al Shandagha Roads Corridor Improvement Project undertaken over five phases extending 13 km along the Sheikh Rashid, Al Mina, Al Khaleej and Cairo Streets.

“Upgrading the Falcon Junction will ensure free traffic movement across Al Shandagha Corridor (Al Khaleej and Al Mina Streets), and step up the intake of both streets. It will also enhance traffic safety, provide entry/exit points for Rashid Port, and provide more parking spaces under the new bridge to serve the area.”

The Falcon Junction upgrade project will involve the construction of two bridges along Al Khaleej Street. The first bridge will extend 750m northwards while the second will stretch 1,075m southwards.

The project will also include the construction of a one-lane 250m bridge for right-turn from Khaled bin Al Waleed Street to Al Khaleej Street.

It will also include the construction of a two-lane 500m tunnel for left turns from Khaled bin Al Waleed St to Al Mina St as well as a surface signalised junction linking Al Khaleej with Al Ghubaiba and Khaled bin Al Waleed Streets.

The first two of the five phases of the Al Shindagha Corridor Project have been completed.

The contract for the Falcon Junction upgrade project is one of six contracts planned to be awarded under the Phase III of the project.

Scheduled for completion by 2025, Phase IV of the project will include the improvements along Al Khaleej Street.

The Phase V, which is planned for completion by 2027, will involve the construction of southwards 1.5km bridges leading to Deira.
